Briefing on Russia-UNDP Strategic Partnership

The briefing took place on 23 February 2016 in New York on the eve of the UNDP 50th Anniversary Ministerial Meeting. The briefing attracted the representatives of the Permanent Mission of 20 countries to the United Nations and was very successful and impressive.

Gennady Gatilov, the Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, started off his presentation by stating that the UNDP-Russia cooperation is going well and that the Russian side is happy and satisfied with the current level of cooperation. He pointed out that the Russia-UNDP Trust Fund for Development and the Steering Committee are working very well and reiterated also the interest of the RF to enhance cooperation with UNDP.

Helen Clark in her statement thanked the DeputyMinister for coming and for organizing the briefing for the Member States. Cihan Sultanoğlu delivered speeches highlighting the main results and achievements of the Russia-UNDP cooperation in recent years. Xu Haoliang emphasized that the partnership with the Russian Government in the Pacific is expanding and he expressed appreciation to Russia for the generous support ($7.5 million) towards Disaster Resilience for Pacific SIDS (RESPAC) project that will contribute to the ‘5-10-50’ UNDP globalpartnership programme in support of the Sendai framework implementation.

All very substantive statements were followed by comments and questions of the participants who thanked forsupport provided by Russia through UNDP for socio-economic development in the CIS countries and humanitarian and development assistance to Syria, welcomed the project in Small Island Developing States funded by the Russia-UNDP Trust Fund and also expressed an interest in sharing Russia’s knowledge with other countries.
