Our work on gender equality

Gender equality is important from a human rights perspective, and because it is tied to human development and poverty reduction.

Despite constructive steps towards gender equality, women in the region still deal with economic insecurity, under-representation in decision-making, and even violence.

UNDP works with partners in the region to address these problems by ensuring women have a voice in government, passing gender-sensitive legislation and implementing programmes to promote economic participation and prevent violence against women.

Efforts have already resulted in legal reforms to address gender-based violence, quotas for women in government, and business mentoring programmes for women in countries throughout the region.
