Change your Facebook profile picture and raise your voice to end violence against women

November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This year’s theme is Orange the World: Raise Money to End Violence against Women and Girls. This also refers to SDG5: Achieve Gender Equality.

Violence against women and girls, a gross human rights violation, devastates lives, causes untold pain, suffering and illness. It also hinders women’s economic and political empowerment.

Although both women and men can be affected by violence, evidence confirms that women suffer overwhelmingly from domestic violence. Latest studies show that 1 in 4 women have experienced physical or sexual violence from a current or former partner in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region.

As UNDP, we work with governments to develop legal frameworks and policies, work to reduce sexual and gender-based violence by increasing women’s political participation and leadership in sectors such as justice and security, conflict prevention and peacebuilding; and invest in research, public awareness and community mobilization campaigns on the prevention of and response to sexual and domestic violence to address gender stereotypes and engage with men and boys.

On Nov 25th — International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women — here’s what you can do to show your support.  If you have a Facebook account, change your profile picture to show your friends that you support the goal to end violence against women and girls.
