Development of national evaluation capacities to help accelerate progress on Global Goals, experts sayOct 16, 2017
NEW YORK/ISTANBUL —Country-level evaluation capacities have a key role to play in helping the world to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), experts said here today at the largest evaluation conference to date.
Evaluations highlight achievements and challenges, ultimately contributing to improved accountability, transparency and decision-making.
The 2017 International Conference on National Evaluation Capacities (NEC), taking place in Istanbul, Turkey from 16 to 20 October is themed "People, Planet and Progress in the era of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" to support and intensify momentum towards attaining the ambitious global goals. It will bring together more than 400 participants from governments, parliaments, development organisations, international organisations, and evaluation networks.
The conference is organized by the Independent Evaluation Office (IEO) of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey and the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS. Mr. Indran A. Naidoo, Director of the Independent Evaluation Office highlights that “for UNDP to be successful to support the attainment of the SDGs, national evaluation capacity development must continue at the country level.
Governments are pivotal in driving the evaluation agenda and this event is about how partners can work collaboratively to bring about this support. With each NEC Conference UNDP leaves a footprint in this direction towards a brighter development future”.
Building on the momentum created by past conferences, the 2017 NEC Conference will provide a platform for dialogue, advocacy and exchanging knowledge and innovations in developing national evaluation capacities. It will also explore the impact of SDGs on evaluation and support the strengthening of institutional capacities in support of SDGs implementation.
“We look forward to supporting countries to develop ways to strengthen their evaluation capacities in the context of the implementation of the SDGs,” said Cihan Sultanoğlu, Assistant Administrator and Director of UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS.
In partnership with a host government, the NEC Conferences are held in every two years in a new region. The conferences are also a part of a broader architecture, in which the United Nations Evaluation Group helps bring together UN agencies and development partners to collaborate, and enhance the understanding and appreciation of evaluation as a powerful tool for public accountability and learning.
